"Design is where you stand with a foot in two worlds – the world of technology and the world of people and human purposes – and you try to bring the two together.” Mitchell Kapor
Who is behind this? Barrie Weaver
As an Industrial Designer, I’ve bridged the gap between the engineering genius behind a product, or system and the people who use it – day in, day out. It’s something I’ve done for blue chip clients in 14 different countries for 25 years
I have learnt from the consumer sector the importance of presenting a product or service to the public – the need to capture the attention of journalists and media producers who will in turn spread the message.
What my career has taught me
During my career I became concerned at the way engineering is perceived in Britain - its image. Far different to its standing in other countries, particularly in Germany and the Far East.
What does he know about engineering?
My work has taken me into industries as diverse as cosmetics, telecommunications and aviation, designing everything from mass-produced personal products to high-tech equipment.
This variety has given me first-hand insight into engineering in its many forms – mechanical, electrical, software, civil, structural, chemical and nuclear. It’s helped me understand the technologies that make different societies tick. And it’s allowed me to see the way engineers are regarded around the world.
Above all, I believe in demystifying the complex world of engineering, and helping companies reach out to inspire bright young minds to join them.
Below is a selection of engineering biased projects on which I and my team were involved.
Barrie Weaver was awarded the prestigious Prince Philip Designers Prize in recognition of his work.
He has also gained a number of British and European Design Awards for product design.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Chartered Society of Designers and served on the Design Council Board from 1989-1995.
